The Increasing Demand for Services
Demand for services has been growing steadily throughout the years and much more dramatically in the last several years. Apart from CPC's reputation for excellent care, the increase in demand in Monmouth County is being fueled by a more complete understanding of the pervasiveness of mental health problems, the social and economic costs of untreated citizens, and a greater sense of openness about mental health issues.
- One in five residents of Monmouth County will have a mental health problem each year, approximately 127,000 people.
- Approximately 36,000 Monmouth County children will have a mental health problem each year, yet only one third will receive treatment.
- Thirty-four thousand (34,000) Monmouth County adults will struggle with alcohol problems requiring treatment, yet only 4,600 men and women received treatment for substance abuse in the entire state.
- Last year, CPC helped more than 6,000 people requesting help, yet the waiting list to receive treatment has doubled this year.
- With enough trained staff, CPC could have helped many more people, yet the funds necessary to do this are non-existent.
- CPC subsidizes the treatment of the majority of its clients, which resulted this year in a $500,000 revenue shortfall needed to cover the cost of services.
Growing to Meet the Demand
In the years to come, CPC will continue its legacy of innovation and excellence in treating a wide range of mental health problems in Monmouth County. CPC has identified a list of priorities requiring an increase in private funding to: keep pace with growing demand; provide new treatment programs; and make necessary capital improvements. The priorities are listed below.
- $250,000 annually for two advanced practice nurses who can help improve the overall physical and mental health of adults with serious and persistent mental illness.
- $500,000 will help provide treatment to economically disadvantaged children, adults and families.
- $500,000 is needed to transport clients to essential programming and for capital improvements to CPC's three counseling centers, its special education school and five group homes.
- $250,000 in principal will initiate a small, yet important start, of an unrestricted endowment fund, to be added to over time, with the yearly interest on the principal either retained to increase the principal or distributed to fund budgetary needs as requested by the administration and board. Endowments provide an ongoing source for future needs.
